California Energy Service Corps Program The California Energy Service Corps AmeriCorps Program is a partnership between the CCC and three local conservation corps programs. Young adults will install energy-efficient and clean energy systems as well as water-saving devices in the homes of low- income residents. Participating are the CCC’s San Diego, Los Angeles, Los Padres and Monterey Bay centers and local corps partners.
Corpsmembers (AmeriCorps members) will receive certificated training and will serve in small specialized crews under the supervision of energy efficiency and clean energy professionals.
Focusing on energy conservation, corpsmembers will conduct energy audits and weatherize homes for low-income residents. Weatherization involves improving the “building envelope” by repairing, replacing and/or installing windows, doors, roofing and ducts, insulation, weather-stripping, lights, heating, ventilation and cooling systems, energy-efficient appliances, water heaters, and low-flow toilets and showerheads. Four of the sites will also have corpsmembers installing photovoltaic (solar) panels for low-income homeowners.
Public buildings may also be targeted for energy efficiency and clean energy improvements.
Corpsmembers will install water-saving devices in homes and structures as well include the devices in outdoor landscaping. These devices will include low-flow toilets, showerheads, faucets and appliances. Other activities will include the design and installation of rainwater containers, the planting of drought-tolerant native species and the installation of water-efficient irrigation systems such as drip irrigation.
Along with the participation of the AmeriCorps/corpsmembers, community volunteers will be recruited to expand the reach of the program.
The work will take place in Los Angeles, Monterey, Orange, San Bernardino, San Benito, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties.
