After an earthquake occurs, CCC crews can be sent where needed within hours. Past efforts have included distributing food, water and other supplies to residents; general debris cleanup; dismantling of hazardous chimneys and walls; and employment of young people displaced by the earthquake. The Corps works with the Red Cross and also helps staff disaster assistance centers.
Some of the CCC’s earthquake recovery efforts have included:
1989 Loma Prieta
1992 Ferndale (April) and Landers (June)
Corpsmembers helping out in San Francisco’s Marina District after the 1989 Loma Prieta quake.
Dismantling a cracked chimney in Santa Clarita after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
