It has been a very eventful month for the Yosemite II crew. We were fortunate to move to our first backcountry camp in Miguel Meadows on May 19th, just one month into our season. Thank you Remo Fickler for making that happen. Miguel Meadows is at about 6000 foot elevation and is located between the Hetch Hetchy switchbacks and Lake Eleanor. It’s gorgeous out here, nestled in the midst of an ancient archeological site. You can feel the peaceful serenity of Miguel Meadows with each breath you take. Before our camp move we completed maintenance on the Hetch Hetchy trail to City Camp, and one day of work with the Yosemite I Crew at Camp Mather improving the fuel break along the waterline, which will allow the Backcountry Program to use the facilities for Debriefing this September in exchange. Two new members joined our crew the middle of May: Lauren Cole from Carpenteria, California (internet) and Jermaine Jones from the Ukiah CCC Center. They have been a perfect addition to our crew. After relocating to Miguel Meadows we have been brushing, improving trail drainage, and reducing erosion on the trails to beautiful Laurel Lake and Lake Eleanor. Our crew has remained solid and united, all feeling blessed to be using Yosemite National Park as our mailing address for the summer.
CURRICULUM:
In May we have covered a variety of topics such as, massage and relaxation with the George the Boot Fairy, Wilderness Survival with Mike Elliot, and Natural History with Andrea Canapary. We’ve also had classes on Camp Construction and Wilderness Safety, and Rec Night. All of the classes have been a success, especially the Rec Night, when we got our badminton field set up. We are planning a tournament in the near future.
PERSONNEL CHANGES:
We have been joined by NPS sponsors Felipe Sanchez (Yosemite I – 2006) and Brady Kirwin (Kings Canyon – 2004) and also Steve Borges as our cook. Welcome Felipe, Brady, and Steve, it’s great to have you on the crew.
