BACKCOUNTRY TRAIL CREW
AUGUST 2007 MONTHLY OVERVIEW
Kevin Livingston, BACKCOUNTRY TRAILS SUPERVISOR
Overview
August finds our camp deep in the backcountry. Seventeen slanted miles up. The air is clear, except those days the high pressure kept us in a shroud of smoke. The water is clear, when we change our filter every week and a half. And the dirt is, well dirty. We love it and will miss it when we pack out later in September, but the air, water and dirt will remain in our veins for some time to come. When we think back on August we’ll think of watermelons, shooting stars, Jessie Ventura, mules (ring a ding, ding, ding), amazing weekend hikes, long awaited rain and thunder, a lunar eclipse, maintenance miles and finally rockwork! We have taken charge on an ambitious re-route in our final August days and are up to the challenge. There is plenty of firewood to keep us warm, and, of course, we have each other. We can feel the fall approaching and can hear it in the trees as they prepare themselves for a change, quickly finishing up their summer’s work along side us. |
