BACKCOUNTRY TRAIL CREW
SEPTEMBER 2007 MONTHLY OVERVIEW
Kiva Vigil , BACKCOUNTRY TRAILS SUPERVISOR
Haiku-Overview:
It’s our final month,
The time has simply flown by,
Our season’s over.
How did it all end?
These last few weeks of our crew,
Well, just keep reading.
First came Labor Day.
Sixty-mile hike to Whitney.
It’s pretty darn high.
Jay needed a doc.
The ranger called a copter,
But he’s O.K. now.
The Kearsage Pass trail,
It’s not so steep any more,
With five new switchbacks.
We moved lots of rocks,
Built walls to stabilize soil,
Firm path to walk on.
The moles walked our trail,
So did a lot of hikers.
We saw lots of smiles.
Still have class at night,
Kiva, do we have to go?
Corpsmembers are tired.
Too bad says Kiva,
Newspaper needs to get done
We’re already late.
Final crew event,
A slug wrestling tournament
Who will be the champ?
Big competition
But Matlee bests everyone.
Wins the title belt.
Last three nights of class
End of the season story.
A very good read.
About a trail crew,
Forest Service early days.
The work has not changed.
Our crew hikes out far,
Four passes in five days
Finish at South Lake.
Mornings very cold,
Frost on all our sleeping bags,
Swimming not so fun.
Visit the hot springs,
Corpsmebers see lots of stores,
Drive Kiva crazy.
Arrive Camp Mather,
We see all the other crews,
Lots of happy folks.
It’s called Debriefing,
A chance to say our goodbye’s,
And look to new goals.
To our crew, so long.
Truly a great summer’s work.
Bye, Kings Crew, Goodby
