Oily Facts
- Used motor oil can contain toxic substances such
as benzene, zinc and cadmium.
- The oil from a single change (1 gallon) can ruin
the taste of a million gallons of drinking water (1 part per
million), the supply of 50 people for one year.
- One pint of oil can produce a slick of approximately
one acre of water
- Films of oil on the surface of water prevent the
replenishment of dissolved oxygen, impair photosynthesis,
and block sunlight.
About Re-refined Oil
- 2.5 quarts of re-refined lubricating oil can be
produced from 1 gallon of used oil.
- Re-refining is energy efficient -- less energy is
required to produce a gallon of re-refined base stock than
to produce base stock from crude oil.
- Re-refined oils that meet manufacturers specifications
may be acceptable for automobile warranties.
- The United States Postal Service and National Park
Service use re-refined oil in their vehicle fleets.
Oil filters
- In the U.S. over 450 million oil filters are purchased
annually.
- About 15 million oil filters were recycled in 1996.
- Recycling 1 ton of drained oil filters produces 1,700
pounds of steel and recovers about 60 gallons of used oil.
